The technical processing of the lens is really excellent. The seals are well to perfectly positioned the adjustment run all clean and smooth as you would expect. The switch must click in audibly tired one - so that can be ruled out faulty operation.
The length has been extended as an example in relation to the 17-40 L and therefore the weight distribution is easily changed, after which first has to adjust the handling.
The picture quality, however, is more than convincing. Tack-sharp photos in all areas, a fixed focal plane even when zooming, making this lens ideal travel companion and an almost "always top lens". The slight distortion at 35mm is visible already disturbing for mcih in some photos, but it is very easy to fix in the DPP, that goes with one click. Of course it would have been nicer, the Canon would have counted directly on the lens - my gripe here is at a high level. Better is always free to this motto.
If you look again at the value for money, then that is a tip lens just where Canon has even been a cashback had offered action this year, so you could get the lens for a relatively small price / can. I suspect it has to do with the minimum distortion at 35 mm range.
The built-IS should be up to 4 stops, I could not confirm yet, because I do not really need the IS in this focal length range - and thus use the lens in most cases without IS. But nice that it has been installed, so you have the peace of mind, if no tripod at hand or still to go indoors to sharp images, without the need to equal the ISO screw up.
The grip and rubberized dials for focus and zoom leave no questions.
The attached hood, (common with L lenses in Canon), makes impeccable work and affects not handling.
This lens is indeed much more expensive than the "old" 17-40er Canon to deutlcih cheaper than 2.8er version and towards this also noticeably lighter, it is worth hinsichtlcih sharpness figure for full-format cameras to buy. For cameras with Verlängerungsfakor should think twice about whether the charge is justified, since the peripheral areas do not really appear in the assessment of sharpness. Only to clarify for the user, whether the minimum focal length of 16mm appears relevant to 17mm. Here in the wide angle that's a large amount, this 1 millimeter. This question, however, we must each answer for themselves, best try.
A class all-rounder.
