The imaging performance are at full frame (Classic film and the D700) at open aperture good and very well from Aperture 5.6. Especially in the lower aperture range the lens can be used creatively and allowed a nice game with the depth of field. Flower Photography succeed eg very good. The lens has macro capabilities almost here. At DX has virtually a normal lens. Since I put all systems, the 35/2 is universally applicable. The Focus seated quickly and accurately - better than some AF-S lenses. If you want to focus manually, you have to ask, however, on the camera to M a M / A function does not exist.
Unfortunately, these lenses are dying out slowly, because the engine must now migrate into the lens rather than the camera. For this purpose it has to be as complicated as possible, so that the lens holding no longer so long. The lenses are larger, the lenses have no longer any space for themselves and to share this with a lot of technology. Has formerly a lens survived a small crash without prejudice (even a more favorable model) is in the VRs, integrated AF-S G lenses, then faster service than before due.
Certainly the objective is the newly calculated lenses inferior in DX range and also for full-frame are better (and extremely expensive) alternatives to choose from. But it is somehow not as synthetically designed for high-resolution reproduction, but has character, its weaknesses and its strengths, which ultimately lead to specific images. Sharp in all corners is not always necessary and far from beautiful. Of course, increasing pixel density is a good argument for the (constantly) new acquisition of better lenses. Only grow neither the monitors according to the resolution, nor the need for Murals seems to be growing. Well, if you like has many pixels, and then around like cuts in the image and the "composition" so that opportunity, then that's an argument for this audience I would not recommend the lens.
Since it is a classic Nikon and nothing more and nothing less will be from me 5 stars.
