All this Mazenaud collection is superb and this book on Japan is in this tradition. Interesting because it is particularly well documented with beautiful iconography, and gives a good idea about the art of ancient Japan and can prepare his trip to Japan and the clash of cultures. It is quite expensive but you can get lucky, like me, to come across a good used book that can supplement this superb collection of art books.
