It is true that learning Hindi is especially confusing if one knows that in neo-Latin languages. However, although the presentation is nice and clear explanations (CDs are essential, Indian phonetic being far removed from ours) the choice of dialogue (and the vocabulary used) that leaves more perplexed since they are of no use to talk soon as you get in India, nor to understand the matter. Another shortcoming: Given the very different phonetics, it would have been appropriate to give the possibility to listen to how you pronounce the new words each lesson or at least the most difficult ... while we must find the fishing in dialogue throughout the book. Certainly, the best methods of learning of Hindi are in English (and a very good Italian) but there since 2004, a small book in French: the express Hindi published by Dauphin small phrasebook which can help to fill the gaps in this edition of Assimil I find very pretentious (but that's a personal feeling) and not practical at all, though pleasant for the information it gives to Indian culture.
Without awareness of Assimil, this method would have remained unanswered.
