Have the server with 4GB RAM, 4x3TB HDD equipped and operate it with FreeNAS as network storage, the safe houses my file and media collection and streams throughout the home. A comparable NAS from known manufacturers would cost tens of times and would be less performant. Although I reach "only" up to 80 MB / second. But that is where used ZFS file system that needs a lot of RAM (at least 6GB would be better) and the fact that two of my hard drives already are a bit older (5400 revolutions). My neighbor has the same system with four hard drives (all 7200 revolutions) and 8GB RAM. He reached 120 MB / sec of data throughput. He also has a second server of the same type and swears by their longevity and stability. My system has only been half a year in use, but I believe it.
The CPU is never really busy, so the system has enough power reserves. To buy the newer HP servers for about 300 euros, makes little sense for this purpose. Convincing is also the power consumption, in comparison with normal NAS systems. The four hard drives (depending 5 to 7 watts) pulls the part 30-40 Watt. By comparison, my Zyxel attracts as much with only one hard drive. Better it is not easy. Strong buy recommendation!
