If you go on trekking in Nepal, it is the book to read before you go. The atmosphere, local culture and montanges are still as fascinating and little has changed since the days of Maurice Herzog. Although the equipment grew, adventure is still there, as evidenced Everest in recent years. In addition to "Annapurna" which describes the pioneers, I recommend "Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer describes the adventures of a recent expedition.
