Customer Review

Yes, there is a selected pieces of editing, not the most shocking. The irony, sarcasm does not however absent, and through letters playful gush of flood lightning illuminating the sordid manner as much as derisory. This book is a historical testimony, like it or not, and for the following reasons.
Testimony of sordid first 1 / woman, although noble, who is married by her father to a man she has never seen to a political alliance that will not last, which is deprived of her dowry a marriage contract, which wipes out cabal cabal and refuses the convent as much as using his body as the Montespan; of women as objects, women doomed to procreate 2 / of courtiers, addicted to drink, gaming, orgies, and some do not hide their preference for their "young pages" (sic); pedophilia perfectly assumed and known to the court of the most Christian King Louis XIV; 3 / Lutheran and Calvinist Protestants persecuted after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, forced into exile or forced conversion (dragonnades): Lutheran forcibly converted to Catholicism, Princess Palatine always try to practice according to their own faith and help as best she could his coreligionists; 4 / the King of France, toy consenting to Maintenon and churchmen, ignoring the Bible casant his bastards to consolidate the possessions of the King of France and quick to war. If he had no sling, he had to declare war and to make willy-nilly on average every 4 years ... In particular ravaging the Palatinate ... 5 / France, ruined by train royal life of the royal family, the king's court, wars of succession, and emptied of Protestants who were numerous in industry and crafts.
Being a trinket, Princess Palatine also display the ridiculous: it remains a noble concern of his rank, she mocks the requirements of the label to which it folds however, complains about his lifestyle daring to see "poor "(sic), waiting for the New Year's gifts of the king as a dog's sugar.
Testimony religious polemics on Jansenism, the quietism, his correspondence with Leibnitz; his Lutheran vision of Catholic France of 1672 to 1722 is valuable
The monstrous: this partial match yet conceals banal Semitism lightning under Louis XIV: the raugrave Louise, his half-sister, she wrote the 2/11/1716 in Paris: "... I am really sorry that the plague reign in Celle. The Jews who brought it there deserve to be punished ... ". There are also the murders to the court which Princess echoes, usually by poisoning; his aversion to the English could also be proverbial. Finally, the time of the deplorable medicine that continues to vilify ferociously Princess Palatine, who prefers to follow his instincts and habits of the German youth.
For all these reasons, if the collection is incomplete (10 000 letters of correspondence in reality), the choice is wide enough to see all these aspects analyzed by the Princess Palatine. He does not she a lovely figure, but an observer whose letters constitute a chronic mentalities during the reign of Louis XIV, and the myth of the Sun King giver of peace, prosperity and health takes thrusts.
Because part, this collection will be useful for historians of mentality of the modern era, especially the position of the same woman in high society, including smallpox will be an emblematic present.
We regret the lack of genealogical tables, which are replacing notes indispensable footer, which make understanding difficult.
