Third novel of the American writer, third slap. With Appearances Gillian Flynn walk the reader in a particularly enjoyable exercise in style. If it seems at first away from his favorite universe, the better to plunge them into a second explosive particularly disturbing part. The last time I felt such discomfort, that was before the harrowing film Jaume Balagueró, Malice.
The American novelist likes to surprise its readers and it does so in a very beautiful way. The title of the book in French accompanies each of the major phases of the history and then takes on another dimension in the final pages.
Gillian Flynn alternates narration with two views: that of Nick, grieving husband and that of his wife, Amy, who tells his story through a diary, his meeting with Nick until the day of his disappearance. The first part alternates with the present and the past. Until Nick discovers a terrifying 'this' becomes poisoned chalice. Discover which tips the plot at the conclusion of the annual treasure hunt organized by the latter for their five years of marriage, just before she passed out suddenly in nature.
Appearances are against Nick becomes the number one suspect in the disappearance of his wife to the investigators and the media. The amazing truth will make him realize he has to do a formidable opponent and unsuspected. To discover what happened to his wife, he will sign a pact with the devil ...
These appearances are two sides of the same coin. When one of the faces is exposed to light, the other always work in the dark. And when the story takes its stride, the room spins on its sharp side at the instigation of the novelist, capturing flickers of light rays, drop and exposes his amazing truth.
The end was literally flabbergasted. It is a sudden conclusion of a little frustrating fist and very pessimistic, but that is the trademark of Gillian Flynn universe. As in her other novels, it gives hope an acid taste that burns the throat and plunges us through the pages in a carefully orchestrated oppressive pessimism. We feel this evil so visceral, even after turning the last page, which abandon us to our fate.
If you liked Dress married and Alex (plp) of Pierre Lemaitre, if you expect a book that transports you and overtake you, then this third appointment of Gillian Flynn with his French readers is not to be missed .
