A dream for trutschige Sunday Thrift Stores. A nightmare for everyone else.

I bought a complete, high-quality, stylish VSF-wheel with a hub gear and the Hebie Chainglider. Before that I had a long time another bike with a derailleur, then I have a Nabenschaltung- experience so plentiful. I changed the time of chain to hub gears, as I noted here in the flat north, that five to eight passages enough and I had to replace the rare chain (wider at hub gears and always just running less stress from wear) and pinion. At that time, I had retained the chain protecting the derailleur: a normal, overhead apron to all sides open up. With the new trendy wheel of Hebie Chainglider and thus the anger, the unreliability and the cost came also came along with it. The realization came to start later. Today I threw the second Hebie Chainglider in the trash and go rather first complete without. Because with it no more.
Why is it? First, I promised myself from the complete covering of the chain a longer life of the chain, because the protection against dirt is obviously. None. The dirt collects in the housing. In addition, the maintenance of the chain is barely acceptable possible: I can not see whether it is dry or dirty and above all I can not simply once oils, I have to use either a tiny hole or must remove the Chainglider. Comfort gain: zero. In addition, the Chainglider was additionally secured at the last workshop stay with cable ties, as it is not too stable. Thus, access is still uncomfortable to chain. Absolute zero is reached, however, today for the second time, and so I have enough of it: The chain expands naturally as ever while driving. I am hard (> 100kg) and step vigorously every day in the pedals (travel speed 28 km / h daily> 20km). Today, after exactly 1.060km since the last workshop visit with exchange of the chain, pinions, etc. the end was already in the area: the chain is stretched, but I do not see that because of the plastic bag (Chainglider). The chain can not sag loosely, since they put in plastic wrap (Chainglider). When reversing Push the stretched chain pushes on and blocked the whole wheel. The plastic bag is entrained and is drawn between the chain and sprocket front. All fixed and the plastic crap is half torn apart. I have abfummeln everything and put the chain on sprocket. Hands eingesaut, eingesaut sleeves, Chainglider broken, into the trash it. I did not have to push the wheel very far back: already pulling out of the bicycle (about 50cm) was enough. Beautiful mess. The first time I did this happen, when I was standing at the traffic lights and some backwards stepped to align the pedals to start: Result: when starting the chain devoured the Chainglider and fell off. All jammed. Stopped at the intersection. Mist.
You can prevent that by regularly tightens (depending on the level of sagging chain) chain. Just stupid, that the chain and the degree of sagging / Gedehntseins indeed can not see thanks to the plastic casing. The tensioning is also a fumbling: loosen on one side, the rear screw, wheel drag over / wedge, then tighten, then loosen other side, pull over and everything nice centrally adjust again to make it hinhaut with the brakes. Dirty hands again guaranteed.
I had with the derailleur not (chain tensioner available) and with the gear hub (with normal fender) not (although chain hung by considerable but it jammed nothing when wheel-from-the-rack-pull).
Conclusion:
+ Schick.
But
- The re-tensioning is mandatory
- And means extra work.
If this is not done:
- Total failure of the wheel.
- Soiled hands / clothing in addition.
- Oil the chain difficult.
- Protection of the chain from dirt: not recognizable.
- Less wear: not recognizable.
I'm going to be retrofitted a chain tensioner and can be mounted a vulgar fender. Not fancy, but for me there is no alternative.
