Portishead is a duet ... here of three. Geoff Barrow, messenger boy in the studios of Bristol machinery, Beth Gibbons, singer unemployed and guitarist Adrian Utley who co 2/3 titles. The music, when you are in Bristol in the early 90s, is heavily influenced by Massive Attack and people gravitate (Tricky, Neneh Cherry, ... all thanked in the liner notes). So after the blues music that is danced in the early 80s (Cure, Joy Division, ...), arrives with the music of Portishead cockroach slowly nod. Based on slow, heavy rhythm, imitating or samplant oldies soul and jazzy, with over beautiful sad voice of Beth Gibbons. Less melodic than the first Massive Attack, Tricky less black than the atmosphere of this relatively uniform ten titles will lay the final foundations of what is now called trip-hop. Boosted by the success of two single "Sour Times" and "Glory Box," this "Dummy" is so far the best of the sparse discography Portishead. Still recommended for depressive ...
