I came here after going through the excellent "Practice of the photography exhibition" Bryan Peterson, who mainly deals with the exposure, and therefore, naturally, I turned to composition. After some research, I finally came fairly quickly on the work of Bruce Barbaum, I give you my impressions. ... I would strongly recommend reading books on photography if we want real progress. Not only we learn absolutely essential and indispensable techniques, but in addition, it is an opportunity to see what others have done. With "The Art Of Photography 'is simply take the next step, indispensable phase, in my opinion, to all those who truly want to move beyond vacation photos.
"The Art Of Photography 'reviews all aspects of the composition, such as tone, contrast, shapes, textures, balance, movement, to mention only the most important, and even a detour to the depth of field and shutter speed. What is wonderful is that at each stage, Bruce gives us these own photos as examples. And what pictures. These cathedrals are ... stunning. Photos essentially Black & White, but which photos. As I already told my entourage, even if only to admire a work of great photos, this book is already great.
I particularly enjoyed the first chapters, in which the author takes the time to explain how the human eye "sees" how he sees the photograph, what creative photography and his book rather abstract approaches on the simple composition and complex composition. For this book is also a work of maturity, who gave time, as we give time for the exhibition and the revelation of the negative in a laboratory, contrary to this world where everything goes fast, too fast, and so is very often botched.
Everyone will find his account, even the aficionados of the silver through two chapters, which, for me, were a bit overwhelmed me, having never set foot in a laboratory to develop a film .
The advice of Bruce Barbaum are so precious and universal, that same student in History of Art find it; the rules of composition being universal and widely used in the world of painting and drawing. The rules. I almost hesitate to use that term because towards the end of the book, Bruce Barnbaum inserts a chapter in which he advocates to be wary of the rules, the rules are there to be shaken if necessary.
What I regret about this book? Nothing, other than the fact that it is not yet translated into French. Aw. I see you all come. I promise, if nobody decides to translate it in a few years, I want to stick myself.
Finally, this is my feeling after turning the last page of this book:
That's what I read, far from having any retained all that is essential in the composition. Just as an apprentice just completed his training with his master, comes here I am to myself, to my own vision, facing my creativity or my non-creativity. It is certain that I will return often browse a particular chapter, and so I can tell you that this book has to be bought, read, read, annotated, horny, aged on the edges, so it will not leave you .
