Before 'Lelia' I had not read the novels "rural" by G. Sand ('the pond to the devil', 'small fadette'). This has nothing to do. It is probably a magnificent work for fans of the genre or literature students, but for me average reader, who modestly want a pleasant time in the company of reading a good writer (certainly from another era, but some older better than others), 'Lelia' is a novel that really suffered the assaults of time, steeped in religion and torments of the soul to no end and a bit silly: Lelia Sténio, Magnus, while this small world hysterical torture fun on the carnal passions! It must be stressed the wealth of existential reflections that make up the core of the novel, reflections on human nature, on religion, on the ascetic life. Here is an excerpt of the lyrics of Lelia concerning his monastic retreat: "And yet, I said to myself again, what is retirement, what is reflection Do I suffered less from these crumbling tombs that within pumps human? What is a stoic philosophy, which only serves to create the new man suffering? What is a sin religion and moaning, whose purpose is to seek pain instead of avoiding it? All this does is it not the height of arrogance and folly? ". I want to emphasize a practical detail regarding footer notes. The book is full! and we learn the suicide Sténio before it was revealed by the author ... Bad Note to the editor so to reveal the story before it was discovered by reading the novel (I had voluntarily avoided to read an overview of the work for not knowing the end of the story, but I had not expected to find it falling on a footnote on page).
