Lara Jean has never dated anyone. Yet this young girl of fifteen has already fallen in love five times, to be precise. For each boy, she wrote a farewell letter to confess their feelings and get rid of. These letters, she keeps carefully hidden in a hat box. She never send them. If boys were to discover her feelings, she would face Peter, his first kiss which is also the star of the high school and take her feelings for Josh, the ex-boyfriend of her older sister Margot.
No chance for Lara Jean, someone will take care of sending the letters. The teenager, who has always lived in the shadow of Margot and never told anyone his feelings will have to face. To repel Josh and prevent it understands that it is still in love with him, Lara Jean will pretend to go out with Peter. Its purpose to it? Avoid Josh. That of Peter? Make her ex jealous. A plan that could help them both, especially since they have no feelings for the other.
Lara Jean is a heroine to which I could easily identify with. I looked like him a lot in high school. It is discreet and rather homebody. When Margot moved to Scotland to study, Lara Jean suddenly finds himself in the place of the firstborn. It is she who must look after his little sister nine years; Kitty and their father. Lara Jean will have to shoulder the responsibilities of his sister ... and more of the rest! His life is turned upside tidy for sending letters. Between his "fake couple" and Josh, who never ceases to want to spend time with her, Lara Jean is lost. Throughout her life, she never took any risks: it does not lead alone and always kept his secret crushes. The letters will upset his quiet daily.
I thoroughly enjoyed Peter, that we discover over the novel. It is popular, arrogant and charming but gradually as he will spend time with Lara Jean and his family, he will also show gentle and considerate. The two teenagers are completely different: Lara Jean enjoys reading, cooking and Peter love going out with his friends. Yet during their "fake appointment", complicity is born and links will be created. Friendship ... or more?
I was less sensitive to the charm of Josh. It is cleared and strangely behaving Lara Jean, since the departure of Margot and the reading of the letter. He too seems lost, he feels something for Lara Jean while a few days before, he could not accept the break with Margot?
Jenny Han has put together a beautiful romance. The short chapters are linked together without dead time and lovers dilemmas of our heroine do not cause weariness. There are a lot of realism in this novel. This love story could quite been born in any school with any teenagers. The characters are alive but not snapshots. The author goes further. Lara Jean is a good girl, yes, but she has a strong temperament. Peter himself, is more than a popular and athletic student.
In short, I loved it! The pen of the author is addictive, adorable characters and very cute story! A great read-relaxation that I highly recommend.
