Blizzard, Volume 1: The secret aesthetes (Paperback)

Customer Review

What a pleasant reading! My column is long overdue and I want because I devoured the book in less time than it takes to tell. I want to thank Peter and Gaulon Mnémos editions for their trust and for the pleasant veeeeeery time they allowed me to go with Blizzard!

Unlike many others (me it seems) I discover Pierre Gaulon with this fantasy novel and I must admit that I love it! So much so that, perhaps, I would let myself be tempted in the future by his other novels, far from my favorite genre ... But before thinking of coming, Blizzard's focus on, first volume of a saga more than promising and I now await the result with great anticipation!

So what about this novel? Actually, that good! While it may seem short, it is nonetheless sufficiently dense to provide a very detailed background as I like to find in fantasy, especially in a first volume; Traditions, customs and history with a capital H, in addition to lots of other little things that may seem insignificant at first when all the information is provided in a timely manner, and so we say just enough to when necessary. Everything is controlled, precise and allows to keep the reader in suspense until the very last page.

The plot is also very dense and is played on several levels, so that every time I thought see where the author was trying to take me, an unexpected turnaround absolutely changed everything for my pleasure. the story in the third person and to each chapter to change point almost allows the plot to constantly evolve and never leaves the reader hungry and thirsty he is to find the few pages left character early. The characters besides, are all very well worked and perfectly nuanced, and the reader does not fail to be surprised by all of them.

The style of Peter is very nice, far from being too rich without being simplistic, it provides a balance with smooth writing, clear and catchy. No words are superfluous, everything is very well paced and I had no trouble making my imagination, well guided as I was!

Okay, I realize at this stage of my column, I have not yet spoken of the story itself ... And I do not think too much dwell, history let you discover. Let's just say that the young hunter, who is aptly named, and Blizzard, an old magician, live together away from everything, in the snow and cold, well hidden, discreet, being forgotten. This is because those who have mastered the dark art are hunted by men of the Inquisitor, which seems to devote a fierce hatred to magic and its practitioners ... Finally, in appearance. Of course, the apparent tranquility of the two men will be turned upside early in the novel, allowing Hunter to take off and see the world at the same time he discovered himself. On the other hand, we discover the young Iak whose lives irrevocably change at the same time, leaving him alone with his pet tiger, full of rage and driven by the thirst for revenge.

I will say no more! I prefer to leave you the pleasure of discovery, because it's worth it. In short, I enjoyed this first volume and I will be at the rendezvous for the following, for sure! Once again, I am equally delighted by the work of Mnémos editions of the beautiful object book (in which the image does not do justice) as the novel itself. Feel free to indulge yourself, you will not regret it. And again, thank you to Peter and Gaulon Mnémos editions, as well as Justine!
