If I decided to read this saga, it is because at my job, the first 4 volumes were available and that made me feel like this series for some time. So I started and I loved this first volume which of plant bases.
Will is a young teenager who lost his father, knight, in a war against Morgarath, black lord and baron felon. Admiring his father, the young man wants to become like him and dream of entering the Order of Knights.
They are four in the same situation as him. Each orphan, they have been taken under the wing of Baron, which offers them the chance to become someone, although they have no parents.
However, all does not go as he wishes. When the big day and the famous Choice, Will be readjusted because it is too late and too little to get sorted warriors. Sad and completely helpless, he feels excluded from everything.
Against all odds, it will be accepted in one of the orders: rangers. His teacher is ready to take him under his wing, provided it and make a difference. Discouraged in advance, Will accept but will not be proud. Will follow a training of several months where he finally discovers that it is not so bad fall. A link between the teacher and the student to create progressively, to the delight of readers.
Still, Morgarath has not said its last word and decided to return to avenge his defeat. The book is divided into two parts: the first concerns the training and Will's knowledge. I really enjoyed this part, because the author takes the time to explain everything and nothing is left to chance. One begins the game, and the "business" ranger would almost want. We also learn a lot about the character of Halt. Me is clearly my heart stroke of the saga. It is sarcastic, humorous, right, honest and very loyal. He never let his apprentice to fend for himself, although he does think. On the outside, it seems to be a bear, but inside he has a heart of gold.
The second part concerns the return of Morgarath. Accompanied by his somewhat odd army, he comes back and is desperate to regain power by fire and blood. I do not know why, but I also feel that this character might please me. I like the real bad guys, who do not doubt they are the best, you know, those who have an oversized ego, we would like to put in their place but we appreciate anyway.
The end in itself is not a big cliffhanger, on the contrary. I found it very suitable for the end of the first volume. The first answers arrive, and with them moments of doubt of disappointment. I found this very touching ending. The author has found the right words and the attachment of the characters is all the better.
In summary, a first volume which well lays the foundation of the series. A little action, a lot of training, characters that would shake, others we would like to support. A pen that embeds directly. Two points of view regarding external Will and another character that I enjoyed. But in the end meet without anyone noticing. And a great end which I like. I can not wait to read volume 2 and I do not doubt that the author reserves some surprises. I also look forward to finding Halt and great sarcasm that I like so much.

"The back is turned, Halt was busy before the stove. The boy coughed to get his attention but Halt continued to stir his tea that warmed. Will coughed again.
You took cold, kid? Rover asked without turning.
Uh ... no, Sir.
In that case, why you cough? Halt continued, this time turning to him. "
