1. You can make the display brightness automatically dim what the brightness also greatly reduced, but due to the technology used (LCD backlit) still gives a very high residual brightness, which I found very disturbing. I could remedy, by letting automatically turn off the display easy (setting via menu). When the alarm (ie a week, five days) of the ring, however, is illuminated by the on / off the alarm function, as a sign that the alarm is activated. However, this small light ring illuminates more than the previously disabled display and can be - you guessed it - not disable. By means of this ring will light the bedroom lit so brightly that it me - and probably all other sensitive sleepers - interferes.
2. The described in other reviews standby hum, which is now eliminated in the latest firmware version, I did not funnily enough. However, the speaker gave when radio (DAB or FM mode), a scratchy, buzzing sound. At first I thought that the loudspeaker signals just a little distorted, but could then find out that the speaker even when completely wacky volume (!) Produced this hum. At low volume levels (Level 4, ideal volume to fall asleep), the noise was so present that music was partly distracted beyond recognition. Newscasters were almost not to be taken at this stage. For larger volumes, the noise were better covered, but were still audible. Whether the firmware update also will address these shortcomings, I can not say.
After I had returned the device to the store (I MediaMarkt endeavor sorry Amazon ;-)) and there all remaining Philips AJB3552 / had 12 by heard, I realized that the hum is not an isolated case in radio mode, but occurred in all devices , thus is a design flaw. In order not to stand as a hothead who hunts ghosts, I was next to my wife and MM Leaders listen to the device and received from all sides agree that the hum can be heard ...
My Conclusion: Actually a good device, which is unusable by the weaknesses described above. Inexplicably, such as Philips, brings a product which should be designed for a quiet and dark environment first and foremost on the market, the incredibly bright lights and noise emits. Sorry, Philips, any buy recommendation from me! :-(
