The result? A panoramic view of the subject, the amalgam of immarcescibles standards and beads rescued from oblivion placed side by side for the pleasure of specialist like the neophyte. The "booklet" offers a careful biography of each artist or band through the song chosen, with supporting photographs.
For this year 1972 we mainly two of the huge "slows" of Creation: 'If You Do not Know Me By Now', Harold Melvin & Bluenotes group (with the young Teddy Pendergrass on vocals) and 'Me & Mrs Jones' Billy Paul (in the version "single")! But one also has three avatars - not least because of the creativity of the Biggest Bosseur Showbiz at the time - James Brown, with multi-sampled "Think (About It) 'Lyn Collins, the haunting' Gimme Some More 'JB's and the' Get On The Good Foot, Part 1 '(but not less than 5'13!) Master himself!
There is also an armful excellent vocal groups including the Chi Lites, the Dramatics or the Stylistics. My favorite remains the Staple Singers with their unsinkable 'I'll Take You There' so loved by Prince (and ex The Beat, General Public) and with these O'Jays 'Backstabbers' which we all have to protect ourselves!
For solo artists, we must also mention in particular the revered Al Green, stainless Joe Tex and very respectable Billy Withers and Bobby Womack. My (re) discovery is that the song 'Trying To Live My Life Without You' is not an original signed Bob Seger but the work of a man named Eugene Williams brought to light by Otis Clay! We must also mention the incredible instrumental Billy Preston, 'Outta Space' (he will play in concert with the Rolling Stones era 'Love You Live' a few years later), the artful Denise LaSalle etc.
