Beyond the novel "Martin Eden" evokes the links between Nature (Martin) and Culture (Ruth), authenticity of "poor" and hypocrisy of bourgeois socialism and capitalism. It is useful to remember that Jack London was strongly attracted to socialism, which shade the novel.
Although this book has many qualities, it is not without flaws. First, some passages are heavy: one feels that Jack London really wants us to understand that Martin Eden is flat broke and still he persists. Well! You will have three chapters! As the opposition Martin / Ruth becomes a caricature at the end of the novel. Several times, I preferred read through too redundant passages. Last fault in my eyes, the end of the novel too common in this type of literature.
Despite these weaknesses, the book is readable and thought-provoking.
Enjoy reading!
