The discs Pat Metheny have certainly not failed during the last decade but the costs and melodic jazz of Pat Metheny Group, whose latest album, The Way Up, dates from 2005, has also greatly missed. That, however, with this Unity Group, guitarist revives the same vein that once made her immensely popular among ECM and Geffen. Except this time, Lyle Mays no longer on board, guitarist co-starred with the saxophonist and flutist high flying what Chris Potter. In addition to a composed elastic rhythmic drummer Antonio Sanchez and bassist Ben Williams, the combo also boasts the presence of multi-instrumentalist Giuilio Carmassi, a musician capable of playing a priori any instrument in his hands and passing also capable at the same time transforming the quintet in small orchestra for the rich and multiple textures. Textures which are still incorporated occasionally subtle electronics and even the famous musical robot designed by Metheny and called orchestrion. All this means that as bewitching melodies and complex are back as well as the epic dimension of a multicultural melting shapes and shifting metrics, marimbas, light vocals and hands clapping sound without forgetting the characteristic guitar leader who has shaped the aesthetics of all PMG discs. It is as beautiful in the time of First Circle, of Letter From Home and We Live Here with just a little more space for extended improvisations that share voluptuously blower and guitarist. Kin is great art and this is a great album for a wide audience!
