With the Eneloop batteries I have had good experiences. Almost no self-discharge and a long lifetime. I've never failed a battery, although I intensively use the type AA for years. I think that is the case, with which I was able to gain less experience even with the types AAA. I am using an electronic microprocessor-controlled charger, so no time-controlled airline charger. I also try to avoid load almost fully charged batteries again. If I'm not sure (in part), I discharge the battery using the charger before.
