- Can prevail Canon unhindered high battery prices (list price 80 EUR for a small lithium-ion battery with 1250 mAh capacity just)
- Canon is long term in hand is how long the battery is available (each battery wears out and loses over the years its capacity up to the uselessness, because I trust a foreign manufacturer who earns his money with the sale of batteries more than instead of holding a camera manufacturer, who probably prefer to sell new cameras in the future the old stock of his cameras alive)
- Canon, despite the induced monopoly over months the battery could not deliver, even though the camera was sold everywhere (expect something bad for the future can be)
The camera itself is great, so I had my concerns quickly forgotten and was pleased with the performance offered. The joy, however, was unfortunately just as quickly over, because when I tried to use the acquired parallel to the camera battery (original battery for 72.26 EUR), the camera overwhelmed me the next time with a number of error messages. Depending on the options selected, the camera turned either right back off, or at best, a limited use was possible. The battery level but was not displayed and the display is always switched off after a few seconds. The spare battery compensates optically the original battery supplied, only one printed on the back label itself (PIHA the original, PKXA the replacement battery) is different. The package was about what you expect from Canon.
To document I have attached pictures of the error messages to the review. Since it did not succeed, to add comments directly at the pictures, I add this one:
- Figure 1 shows the message on power after the battery replacement. Where if you please to the Canon Logo "View" of the battery? On display? Or is a label on the battery mean?
- Figure 2 shows the message when the logo issue was in the affirmative. After confirming the camera turns off.
- Figure 3 shows the message when the logo question was answered in the negative.
- Figure 4 shows the display when Image 3 was left with "Yes". The charge indicator is absent (see red arrow)
An inquiry to the Canon Support yielded no new information, say: "[...] According to your description it appears in the replacement battery, not an original battery or a defective product to act [...]". Both options would be unsatisfactory and leave unflattering conclusions:
- In case of falsification of the steps taken by Canon measures (chip in the battery) would prove to be ineffective. Would be the only success that legal replicas of other manufacturers (which are sold under its own name and does not pretend to be an original) be prevented
- In case of faulty original batteries of suspicion would suggest that the production or the programming of the chip is quite complex and Canon has the process itself is not under control. But also talks that the battery for a long time was hardly available and even now only available through individual distributors is (Amazon currently offers 4, of which only 2 the battery immediately in stock with prices ranging from 93.94 EUR or 129.00 EUR ; elsewhere it does not look better). The shop where I ordered the battery on Amazon, this has of course no longer available and can not make any replacement.
Conclusion: Either way you can not assume that it works fine in the camera so even with a high-priced and with chip secured Canon battery (or perhaps because of?). By unnecessarily complex interface is any future battery purchase for adventure ...
I am surprised that the battery-policy is discussed mainly at the new Canon models only here in the Amazon Review Forum. But a high-quality compact camera has generally probably not the same status as a well-known smartphone, whose antenna and battery problems had a global outcry result. Therefore, somewhat sensationalist headline.
