This beautiful novel by an author I do not know enchanted me: it is not easy to write in diary and letters but in this case, the story is very successful. It happens mostly in Asia, especially China and Japan over World War background, and tells the story of a young woman who has made an unhappy marriage, and following her Japanese lover in this particular company, made of caste, traditions and where there is little room for a woman as "unworthy". This story is a pretext to describe Japanese society of the time, in a style that I liked. Absolutely recommended, to escape into lesser known regions.
