Bose ® Sound Touch ® Series II Portable WiFi Music System (Electronics)

Customer Review

The radio is when you know it only from the illustrations, while unpacking surprisingly small (the size of a thick novel in hardcover format) and makes once a very high-quality impression. It's not necessarily pretty or comfortable to look at, but it looks classy from all sides. The front is covered with fine material which is more reminiscent of high-quality speakers than on a portable radio. In the center is of a mostly colorless display the Smartphone format, which unfortunately flicker with 50Hz, but fortunately very few users are likely to perceive.

At the back there are the connections for the included 20V power adapter, mini-USB and 3.5mm stereo jack as a line-in. Those mentioned in the article description LAN connection I can not find.

The top cherishes a few buttons: On / Off, AUX, volume up / down and six assignable presets with the numbers 1-6.
The same keys are repeated on the supplied remote, on which additionally are the major keys to jump between tracks, a play / pause button and two keys are not specified with thumbs-up and thumbs-down.

Why the track skip and pause buttons are not mounted on the reproducing apparatus itself, is beyond me; a remote control for such a small device seems to me rather a nuisance than as useful.
The device comes with no instruction manual. A tiny printed in several languages Faltzettel informed about potential security risks; a confusing multilingual A4 card in multiple versions to a facilitate access to the use.

If you have no smartphone or tablet (iOS and Android are accepted!) At hand, the unit can be set up via the supplied USB cable to the computer. Without means it is not working. I have chosen the path over the Android tablet.
The initial set-up with installing the app, effortless Find the device, automatic download and install new operating software and integration into the first wireless takes about half an hour. Although I have never needed half an hour to turn on a radio, but ok.

The app, using which the radio is set up for the first and subsequent use, works easily and intuitively and is fairly clear. For each action, a popping Tips opposed that follow, ignore, or you can leave.

What you want to play, at first can be determined solely on the app. The control buttons on the device itself and on the remote control refer only to the selected settings already in the app. So it is not possible, for example, how to jump in a normal radio from a transmitter to the next. But you can only move between a maximum of six stations stored. I think that during today's offer thousands stations currently on the Internet for a significant and not unjustifiable restriction. You can not specify more than six presets in the app itself. How should one be guided if you do not have good memory for station names? May help a the list of recently played stations and sources.

As an additional source to an in-network music library can be integrated. I have no such thing, but wonder how to navigate through the help of only two track skip buttons do? There may also be an App for that. The connection of an MP3 player or smartphone using a non supplied 3.5mm stereo jack cable is probably the easiest. I have not tried, but expecting that the Bose then behaves like a normal active speaker and sound no different from his usual appearance in cooperation with other sources.

For me the most interesting course was the question, as reflected through this unit music of Spotify and other subscription streaming services such as Deezer and Simfy and navigated as in the extensive libraries. For this I must say at once that I am disappointed. Indeed, there are so far only Deezer and Spotify. Other services like Simfy, MTVmusic, Google Play Music or my extensively stocked Amazon music library can not be addressed. So I use Spotify.

There are on the device itself, of course, here is no way to directly access Spotify. Not even on the remote control. So you need still a third device, namely either the smartphone or a tablet with Spotify app. The Bose logs once in Spotify, and then it can be easily addressed by the Spotify app from as a playback device. So it's nothing more but a powered speaker. While normally reflects now on Spotify playlists or albums, you can, after all, this is also very easy as presets put on one of the six preset buttons on the unit. But again, the question: What do I want in a music library consisting of thousands of albums, with six presets? So this is a joke and could have been better equal stay away.

What do the preset keys at all? Well, this: You can call even without the aid of a smartphones or tablets stations or playlists that you have previously set on the app using these keys. Exactly six. If that's enough, you will probably be happy with this radio.

To me it is not enough, but I'm already accustomed to each of my playback devices to stream music from your smartphone at least via Bluetooth - from all sources, which I have named above, plus YoutTube playlists, SoundCloud, local files, etc., etc.. Because now does to a question: Why can not I stream on this Bose my music easily via Bluetooth? This would have the advantage that I sometimes can listen to music regardless of the wireless - the smartphone must indeed seem to be there anyway, to select music. Since only I could take equal a downloaded playlist and stream via Bluetooth on the radio. But do not go. One can go a maximum set up your phone as a hotspot, and then nice tug at the Datenflat by the fact existing in the Phone lists again drawn with the Bose in real time.

At the connection, operation and use options Bose has so much to screw, I think. Since my little Bluetooth speaker makes much more sense can be used as this device. He can not be less (if we disregard the times witty six preset buttons) than the Bose, but much more - namely everything that my smartphone can.

No particular need for improvement in my opinion the sound of Bose, is expected to be great in this name and this price. This little thing, no bigger than a router, actually sounds to multiple numbers larger, loud, clear and differentiated. To enjoy this well-balanced sound you get only if you ears at the same higher with the Bose - holds and a frontal them. Just because it reproduces the heights so pungent clear a fall of sound leakage particularly when only minimal changes the angle. The best way to the great sound of this small receiver enjoy contemporary music, so that at least has the usual line-up bass, drums and other instruments. Pop, pop, jazz, world music, country, blues, electric, everything sounds great with crystal-clear highs, well audible midrange and bass-present. This is fun, if you are staying in the low- to mid-volume range. At the upper end of the volume scale of an unpleasant pressed and clearly thin.

No fun making it, if you like the taste of music is elitist as the price of this equipment. Then adjusted namely a classical music playlist or a cultural channel and annoyed by underrepresented middle and emphasized bass. So no orchestra sounds. I'm sure you could save a lot of this sound when just turn away the bass and treble or could at least turn it off. The possibility of sound processing have at Bose in reliance on the traditional grandeur of sound of Bose equipment but omitted the same time the programmer or designer. Therefore the radio for a lot of my music collection'll think of times. Again, it has a negative effect, that there is no Bluetooth connectivity. Then I could in fact control the sound from the source device, and everything would be so bad.

However, in such a high-quality speakers such as the built-in Bose also immediately the severe limitation of the sound quality of podcasts comes audibly. Just instruments that produce high-pitched sounds, such as flutes and violins sound distorted indecent because of data compression. It just is not fun to hear classical music station on the net. Bose makes it particularly clear with this device.

The display in the center of the unit informed about the rudimentary way, each tuned station or the currently playing track. The unit also has a battery pack. This is probably only meant the time that you spend with the switch between the rooms, not to need to wait musiklos. You can hear about four to five hours of music without power. Since the device can not be completely off and still wireless receives to be activated from the app, the battery the next morning is definitely empty. So fall asleep to music in the arm and then wake up again does not go. Go anyway, because a falling asleep or wake-up missing.

The joy of a really great sounding, high quality and decorative device is so clouded by many adverse influences, and so I would recommend this device only people who have limited to popular music musical taste and also possible is not necessarily hear more than six stations or playlists. Or people who are anyway used to control your music system with the smartphone and therefore does not interfere with an app more. The remote control is then more than superfluous.
