Bitches Brew (CD)

Customer Review

History to mark the occasion to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the publication of this jewel signed Miles Davis, Sony Music released this year a beautiful box. Bitches Brew album concept of beauty but iconoclastic (it may not like) yet has not aged. This work is so important as a trumpeter Mederic Collignon he also wanted to celebrate the event (listen to his Shangra disk appeared at Plus Loin Music ...). The rather catchy and provocative title says a lot about the time. Released in 1970 in a hippie atmosphere and revolt, Bitches Brew remains a contemporary work, as we feel the freshness of the approach. For me, and many others, we take a salutary work. A UFO. And musical term, a stunning sound experience. Anyway, this record in the work of the dark wizard is really apart. It marks after In A Silent Way, a break in the career of Miles (the latter being more attracted to rock and Jimi Hendrix riffs).

If this record was very badly received when it was released in 1970 (the trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith had not himself loved, but will reconsider some years later ...) is that the auditor rightly, the feeling of listening to a double album where musicians do not know where to go. Yet that beauty in harmonics tablecloths! Certainly Bitches Brew is very abstract, but also has incredible flashes. Music is inhabited, Miles seems himself possessed (Miles Runs The Voodoo Down), the fact remains that Bitches Brew has a timelessness as indefinable as marked. There's so much to say about this music that we also never know where to start. As noted by Ralph J. Gleason in the liner notes, "The music speaks for itself" ... For the anecdote so, know that this double LP was long banned from "purists". And inevitably, for music lovers who discovered jazz with Kind of Blue, Bitches Brew disconcerted. Inevitably, Bitches Brew is a work that deserves absolute sincerity. As is the case today with the works of Henry Threadgill, Adam Lane or Wadada Leo Smith.

With an intense emotional power, brushing and bumping our imagination (in my mind, these are scenes of life, but also faces, sweat, blood, napalme, then sand, isolation, 'desert island obviously), and thus Bitches Brew crescendo to our delight and that of our esgourdes. Just listen again the last two pieces of the second disc (Sanctuary and Feio) to get to the obvious: we have here a centerpiece ... Finally, for musicians of the orchestra of Miles , we (re) found Wayne Shorter (soprano saxophone for only), Bennie Maupin (bass clarinet, the saxophone player from rock signed there not so long ago a very remarkable work, Early Reflections - Comment come -), Joe Zawinul on keyboards, John McLaughlin on guitar, and then all the others, just as important in this project: Larry Young, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Harvey Brooks, Lenny White, Jack DeJohnette, Don Alias, Jumma Santos (Jim Riley). 28-page booklet, stunning pictures, sound outstanding (remastered). I also encourage amazonautes reading the humorous commentary Bagration ... Cheerio and happy holiday of years tutti.
