First of all: this movie is, of the design here, an absolute masterpiece. The first and last twenty minutes are cinema history, because there is nothing to shake. The Inferno at Omaha Beach is shown as total and merciless than ever before in the film. The actors are great, especially Tom Hanks, Edward Burns and Tom Sizemore. Spielberg actresses leadership is exemplary. The urban warfare at the end of the film leaves a similar shock effect as the landing in Normandy. But the script - that's the big minus! Spielberg would have been really not necessary this unrealistic story! Why not the mission was: "Sets a prominent officer to, drum sets to!"? Opportunity would all have been given for philosophical reflections on the war. Instead remain between Omaha Beach and urban warfare just empty pathetic gestures and the usual talk about commands sacrifice and camaraderie. Thus seen, "James Ryan" a rather dubious film in all technical, of dramatic and theatrical brilliance. Almost worthy of admiration are again Spielberg's manipulation skills, which he has repeatedly fallen victim themselves. He actually managed to hoodwink the public, he would have turned an anti-war film. But he did not, even though he sees things differently. "Saving Private Ryan" is a well-made war film that is temporarily diluted by pathos and patriotic-themed images. Too bad Mr. Spielberg: it's only four star!
