Netgear EVA8000 Digital Entertainer HD (Personal Computers)

Customer Review

The most powerful argument for Eve was that no additional software is required. Thus Eve 8000 with all should work together what an SMB share can provide, ie any current Windows version, a Linux PC with SAMBA or various NAS systems. So far so good ...

Shortly after connecting the Eva 8000 but turned a disillusionment. Obowhl the device can access Windows shares does the network browsing more bad than good. The device does not show namely at the actual content of the releases, I call all the time real-time browsing, but merely creates an index of the files found. Unfortunately, this means that a new scan is required with each newly added video or audio file on the PC and re-establish the database of Eve. In my case, with about 50 video files and ~ 6000 MP3s The whole process takes about 5 minutes each time. What a shame and that is for me an absolute no-go!

In addition, I've found that the video output via SCART is really bad. Despite good cable and excellent tube TV is bright white strip show in the picture. However, the other connection options are probably in order. Just over HDMI, it should be no problems here well.

Unfortunately, it creates Eva also not in "standby" off the Scart output and the audio output properly. This has a consequence that Eva in stand-by nearly as much electricity as eating in on-state, on the other hand it makes the use of a scart switch box or the automatic switching of the TV when a scart signal arrives unusable. Just does not.

A few things that are I have noticed negative:
- Day 1, 2. Video - EVA 8000 suspended, complete reboot required (is about 45-60 seconds!)
- Seeking in videos does not always work, which of course may also be due to the video format used. This one, however, can bring Eva so as out of step that you have to stop the video and complete restart is unpleasant.
- Is German language set are a few display errors identify the menus. Here rates are partly swallowed, formatting not agree and some error messages do not appear (the message about the video format can not be played because it is not supported - This message appears in English only)

However, made a positive impression of me is software support from Netgear. Although current firmware can not be found on the main pages, there is a whole series of firmware updates in the Community Forum of the American Netgear site (here English is required!). This firmware update functionality to equip and fix the occasional error. The firmware update themselves can import pleasingly simple. Just copy to a USB stick, plug it into Eve and there you go.

With a heavy heart I send my Eva back now. Who can do without the feature "Real-Time Network Browsing" and Eva does not necessarily have to connect via SCART to its TV / wants can not interfere with the access subject him minor quirks. For me, this device is so but not interesting.

With respect to the Realtime Browsing from network shares Netgear in your forum at least improvement for the successor EVA 8100 praised you want to appear in Q4 / 2007 or Q1 / 2008. I'll try again with the successor well.
