The ordered me hard drive makes at first sight a good impression. It is relatively fast for a SATA2 HDD (80MB / s min, 135MB / s max) and, unfortunately, a bit noisy. I have had several Hitachi HDDs, and are quieter lot. I think it is because there is a datacenter / enterprise HDD, and as the noise is relatively unimportant. As a backup hard drive they would be suitable for continuous operation in a quiet computer rather not.
The HDD comes sealed in an antistatic bag as we know it from new disks. After the opening I made slight scratches on the housing - because where would they shove in a hard drive cage. Since the first doubtful about the time the dealer "never been in operation" came en new.
A look at the regular SMART information (HD Tune, CrystalDiskInfo) showed 0 hours. I was not about shows, and resorted to smartmontools. Lo and behold, though there were also 0 Hours displayed BUT! In SMART test during several test runs were entered! The penultimate test was carried out at 33693 hours of operation! These are 3.8 years Betreibszeit a "never been in operation" s hard drive!
That to me is the same as if you would turn back the mileage on the car. Consider also that if the operating hours were reset so easily, and the error rate and other parameters can be reset as well. In my case, the disk appears to be okay (see full log below).
Conclusion: it is probably at server refurbished HDDs, who already have a lot of hours on the clock, not as good as new hard drives! It makes a big difference if a hard disk is "only" 3.8 years old, or has been 3.8 years in operation. So much the worse if you try to cover it up by resetting the operating hours to 0!
To what extent this applies to other traders, I do not know. Who wants to risk it anyway, can with smartmontools the test course with smartctl -a / dev / sdX (where the X has to be replaced depending on the number of disks in the computer by a / b / c / ....)
Here the full smartctl log:
