So far I could connect my MacBook Pro while (2008) via HDMI to the television, but do not use the 5.1 system connected there. In addition, the connection of the MacBooks can transmit audio through HDMI (that goes since the 2010 models). With this cable I go from the combined headphone / digital (optical) output directly to the optical audio input on your home theater system (LG BH6620s) and so can use the sound system and the stream or listening to music from the laptop.

The cable comes with caps at both ends, and is (like most Toslink cable) very thin. Should wrinkles you do not, but it rolls rather, that if you do not frantically tried to break up because should anything happen - I do not in any case never one got broken. This cable in particular is only 1 meter long (there are also other sizes), which is very short and you should advance to assure that there is enough :)

Short: Recommended to transmit sound from an optical output in mini jack form a unit with optical (Toslink) input.
