Steinbeck retraces the journey of a family during the Great Depression of 1929. It is a journey full of obstacles (death, meanness, injustice) that they are trying to reach California, land perceived as idyllic. Unfortunately, this paradise does not exist and the disappointment is very big. For Steinbeck accurately describes the living conditions of its people who are reduced to almost nothing. Through this journey to the West, it is primarily the loss of humanity in a society adrift, that narrates the writer.
A strong novel to read, which perfectly demonstrates the economic and especially social issues resulted from the Depression in the United States.
