After switching to the full-frame turned quickly the question of how the wide-angle range must be covered. The Standard L lenses 24-70 and 24-105 mm are sure excellent, but 24 mm are down not the world, especially since I had "tasted blood" APS-C range with the EF-S 10-22 mm when it comes to the wide-angle or ultra-wide angle range.
This I was already for the technical problems in WW lenses as edge blurring and distortion sensitized. After internet research and a visit to the dealer came seriously only two lenses into consideration, namely the expensive Canon 16-35 mm 1: 2.8 L USM II and the older 17-40 mm 1: 4 L. Both could not convince me , In particular, the blurring at the edges of the 16-35 2.8 are not acceptable for this price.
Therefore, I was delighted at the announcement of the new 16-35 f4 and the first positive impressions here.
Now, after four weeks of intensive use, I'm still excited about the new wide angle. In order not to be too boring, my impressions in shorthand:
+ Very short focal length ("almost" ultra wide-angle) allows the great prospects
+ Very good imaging performance far into the border areas; in the corners, there are certainly still uncertainties and a slight "sogginess", but the focus is way better than the 16-35 or the 17-40 2.8!
+ For an L-lens relatively easily (615 g)
+ Great feel and good handling
+ IS (well, perhaps not absolutely necessary at wide angle, but also does not hurt)
+ 77 mm common filter adapter
+ Front lens does not rotate
+ Excellent functioning Fluoritvergütung (although I'd still screw a filter -> protection, dust tightness)
o CA present but significantly reduced
o vignetting within acceptable limits
o Lens flares also within acceptable limits
o f4 with no light Riese (plays not so important in landscape and architectural photography)
o slight barrel distortion, absolutely bearable for this focal length range
- Without a filter not dustproof! This for me is not important, because I already use a filter, it should in my opinion also not be advertised but!
The price-performance ratio, I would like, especially compared to other lenses, described as absolutely fair.
Conclusion: Anyone with its full-frame camera would move into the fascinating world of wide-angle photography and a zoom investigated, has with the 16-35mm 1: 4L The ME is currently by far the best lens in hands. Crystal clear buy recommendation!
