There are no spoilers!
In short, The Evil Within is for me already on the way to become a classic, because the game has everything it needs to do so. There is no really comparable titles on the market, the gaming experience will burn in the memory and I'll have to measure all future games in the genre of The Evil Within.
The strongest aspect of obvious The Evil Within is certainly the incomparable atmosphere. A similar Immersion I can learn 1 (remake on the Gamecube) last in titles such as Half-Life 2 or the spiritual predecessor playing The Evil Within, Resident Evil 4, and Resident Evil. My hope that Shinji Mikami, creator of The Evil Within and just these two parts Resident Evil, so would pull me back in the game was so fully met. Level and enemy design are terrific, the detailed environment framing the gaming experience an awesome and the bare gameplay itself already makes incredible fun.
The Evil Within is again one of those games whose aspects to be desired here and there left, but live perfectly in its entirety and draw a very peculiar, but exciting game experience itself. Something that I find especially with Japanese titles again.
History:
For this I will not say much, except that I really wanted to know until the end what is actually going on here. The whole setting is so varied and mysterious, that my interest in the game world has always maintained. Negative falls here on, however, that the main character Sebastian is rather one-dimensional and partly too cool with the interacted, what just happened to him. Is perhaps as a Japanese thing ...
Gameplay:
Who knows RE4, will find its strengths here again, except that here a lot more horror's inside. The perspective that ammunition shortages and the light / shade ratio made me exactly explore each level and take targeted action. These makes sense that the broad and varied weapons selection allows a good portion of tactics in battles. This is necessary because the game is simply not sure. The arms act powerfully and their effect is bloody and exciting staged. Each enemy contact and acts significantly to the possibility of whole areas cope by hiding and ambush attacks increase tension and diversity of the gaming experience enormously. In addition there are impressive mini bosses and scenic rousing script sequences, round everything.
Technology:
With the latest patches can on the PC now, the frame rate be set to 60 and Cinema bars may be removed. Overall, the game looks absolutely for Next-Gen and can fully develop its atmosphere. Nevertheless, the game is based on a somewhat outdated technology, which has often been criticized, especially on consoles. On closer inspection, there are a few weak elements here and there. But I think that the pure technique does not really matters behind the presentation. Because despite partly weak textures and strange collision detection the overall package is simply breathtaking. The use of particle effects, shadows, light and physics combine to form an exceptional experience. Here the use of technology will clearly be the nominal strength of the technology.
Conclusion:
If you like slow but punchy gameplay and want to get involved in a real horror trip is the right place. All thumbs up. I am sure that Evil Within is often used in the coming years for comparison and just become and con regarding level design classic.
