I have the new 24-85 VR today subjected to a first practical test on my D800 and fall in direct comparison to my prime lenses in the RAWs slight CAs (but nothing that will not get away the software). The 24-85 VR is not a miracle sharpness, but not bad for a zoom. It is weitwinkelig enough to be used in areas and extends to the portrait focal length. It is relatively easy, cheap (well, Nikon-low) and feels strong. Watch out!
The zoom ring has some resistance, but I personally like the way better anyway. Zoom Creep I could not find here definitely. At 85 mm, it extends quite far, but acts not shaky. The VR is making a good job, so I in low light even had a higher yield than with my 50mm 1.4.
The point of focus has also been sitting, so I had to re-adjust anything in the camera.
I am happy. This will be my new Always plan on the D800 ...
