I've needed less than data storage but as an external drive for music and projects. This meant for me fast access times, even with large amounts of data (my music is completely tagged only in WAVE format), as well as constant read / write speed while playing the music and working with not little .psd files in graphics and style.
The plate was, as usual, Amazon, delivered quickly and as well as unpacked soon. Since many HDDs suffer at the moment of failure and report problems, I have first of all the software installed and the 3 on-board diagnostic tools run (1st few seconds, 2. to 2 minutes, 3 for several hours). After all tests were gone through without any problems and the hard drive was formatted, then it was looking for programs (for WAVE-tagging and CD ripping) and get started.
After several painstaking hours of renaming, ripping and Tagging would then be before the first 11GB music on the disc. During ripping and Umbennenens I ran the already copied music and have from time to notice that the music broke off and the Windows Media Player typical red symbol for "file not found" appeared. After you start playback again, however, disappeared.
Considering various statements on this and other external HDDs on "error only after installing the first data" I copied caution before all the music on my internal Samsung HDD and started at the same time renewed the "Complete Diagnostic Tool". Got up the next morning and WTF ... the board had errors at once. Quick checked the copied music ... ... omg ... compare 800MB lacked all albums. Actually lacked a little more than a CD by a 3-CD album.
So quickly the music again copied (only the missing album). It seemed to me strange that at a time the pop-up for newly connected device "What do you want? - Windows Explorer - Copy music, -blalbla" had found its place somewhere.
After some further diagnostic tests (which were flawlessly strangely again) and a few hours of additional online time of the plate, unfortunately I had to realize that at a distance of one probably 30 minutes to go to an hour the hard disk off and on again immediately went to. But I was sure I had the sleep timer away. Checked short, set no sleep time.
So unfortunately I had come to the conclusion that the hard disk shortly after some time off and concerns (not visible on the LED or so, not even in the Windows Explorer ... only seen on Pop-Up which then rises and on interrupting the music ).
If the hard disk to a pure backup, this would would be annoying and dangerous. But if you want to hang with the board and music hours long music sessions, regardless of whether or not to run privately or in public, it is an absolute no-go, the disk exposed from time to time.
Unfortunately, Amazon could send any replacement disk, because the things are sold. For me, though no reason never to buy WD, but at least I will of MyBooks my fingers leave and myself first umblicken towards Samsung / Seagate, which proved to me through years of good service (3 x Samsung F3 in continuous use internally without problems since 2008 and a Seagate since 2010).
