The Circle (Hardcover)

Customer Review

We are located in sunny Southern California, some, but not for many years in the future. The Internet company Circle is a dream of an employer who, although only six years old, the communication and social media market dominated world. Facebook and Twitter are now called Zing, Google is history (and Amazon is also no question).

Mae Holland is 24 years old and very happy to have managed to get a job with the Circle. The initial euphoria, however, soon put to a hard test, not only because of permanent and continuous monitoring of their performance, but mainly because it is expected of all Circlern not to separate between work and private life, perceive as many of the event exporter and up the physical exhaustion "zingen". In almost painful to read personal conversations she is drawn to their shortcomings, and soon adorn six different screens her desk so that they can meet all communication requirements simultaneously. What succeeds with flying colors, thanks to better coaching.

The more Mae is recognized by their employer as a person, the more we learn about the goals and strategies of this hyper successful company that so much can be revealed, be tantamount to see everything and know everything, of course, only for the benefit of mankind. Who would also deny that transparency is a valuable asset, and that any decent position would be if he knew that he is under constant surveillance? Scientology can energetically greet, and Eggers dominated the perfidious great dialectic that brings the intentions of Snowden and the NSA under a not too wide-brimmed hat.

On the other hand, the novel has quite his weaknesses. This is especially Maes downright pathetic naivete that at the beginning still somehow seemed plausible to me, because she is still very young and new to the company, but throughout the novel, I found it increasingly difficult to understand their thoughts and actions. A bit more doubts about the Big Brother conduct their employer would have the intelligent person, as she is presented to us, but then expected.

Also, I believe that it Dave Eggers has done something slightly so as resistance is headed the Circle to the technology and information monopoly and thus on something like world domination. People who consider their personal lives as sacrosanct, and politicians who just do not thereby make a fool of oneself that they constantly carry a camera around his neck, which records what you do and say will be projected by Eggers world one for my taste great rarity. Nevertheless, "The Circle" a sustainable appeal to common sense, to closely monitor who what why want to know about us, and, if necessary, to take a stand. While it is still science fiction, but certainly not nearly 40 years away, as it did Orwell's "1984".
