However, this is the case and I am happy to have bought the DVD version. It makes m. E. the most sense because you can plan his routes already at a desk with a PC and the supplied MapSource program. Although the installation of the Garmin is somewhat lengthy, but can be combined on a disk several cards.
For other interested parties and against frustration here a few tips & information:
1. After you install the DVD on the PC, the activation of the card for that Garmin device is performed. It is useful if the serial number of the Garmin (on the GPSMAP 60 is the label under the battery!) While already at hand has. The so-called. Device identification can read directly at device connected via USB, the product key card is glued to the back of the DVD case.
Likewise, simplifying the process when the unit previously been registered, while an account is created with myGarmin. Of course it's annoying, but honestly, how Garmin prevent a single card product bought lands on hundreds of devices because otherwise ...?
Then, the map data for use on the registered device is unlocked and can be transferred via MapSource.
2. The transfer to a Micro SD card works best and fastest when you can use an SD card reader in or on the PC. Otherwise it's just only via extremely slow USB interface on the device. Because you can - depending on the amount of data - already with 6 to 12 hours expect (!)!
In any case, you have to avoid a "trap":
MapSource clears when transmitting on the SD card may previously existing Garmin maps. If you have a pre-installed only on the SD Card, so you have obtain in any case for transmitting a new SD card and use, or he will lose the preloaded map!
I've done it this way and a 4GB Micro SD Card Transcend used to transfer my Topo V3 Germany and the 2010 Navigator parallel (!):
Set in MapSource the first scale map 2000 km. Now it can be seen on the right the entire card surface. Then select the tool "map features" in the toolbar, and thus the entire card surface frame (click, hold and drag). Now all map segments appear in the "cards" list. Below the list the number of cards (segments) and their total volume is displayed.
Then adjust the second card and repeat the process. After 988 cards were displayed at about 3.2GB with me. Then select Enable "Send to Device" function, "Removable Disk" and click "Send".
If necessary, will receive a warning when Garmin maps on the SD card already exist (for me that was the previous transmission of Topo Germany V3 DVD).
If you now click on "Yes" the fun begins, and the selected Garmin maps replace the contents of the SD card. Meanwhile, you can z. B. or go to work to school, two parts View of "Lord of the Rings", visit the dairy and the like ...
But then you have a pretty combined dataset and does not even have to change the SD card for road navigation or Geaocaching.
The map data is the way from April 2009, a rather fresh in version 2010.1. It is true that Garmin now also an update for about 60 offered (nüvi Onetime (tm) City Navigator Europe NT 2011 update), which has angered some Vorrezensenten, but that's in Navi business probably more the norm. Finally, as a DVD must indeed be times produced some point and a daily version I have seen yet anywhere. Just wait a year or two, then an update already worth more as natural. And possibly a downloadable version is then more recent than the DVD version of the update.
By the way, I could at first glance could not detect any content errors, quite unlike the Topo Germany, the outrageous misinformation includes already in my immediate living environment in Berlin (incorrect street names, position many POIs very inaccurate, etc.). By contrast, the City Navigator is very detailed, accurate and even leads the smallest pizzeria in the neighborhood on.
I hope my comments can help a little and facilitate the use of this really neat product.
