The ColorMunki Display is a reasonably priced tool for calibrating the monitor prior to amateur photo editing.
I have two Samsung monitors Which I could Easily calibrate with the device (both under Windows and
in Ubuntu 4.12 - using Argyll CMS). HOWEVER, make sure you have a mains-powered USB port at hand
otherwise you can detect the device but not use it.
