Did the DS bought 413 in June 2013 as a central NAS for our 2 Macs and both Win XP / Win7 laptop. The DS will be shipped neatly packed and is easy to install and runs now for 2 weeks without problems. I have currently 2 Western Digital Red fitted with 3 Tbyte and configured as SHR (Synology Raid). The DS 413 runs with these plates very quiet and barely audible. The plates are fairly simple to install in enclosed plastic frame with rubber pads for vibration damping. So I have about 3 Tbyte net mirrored for my dataset of 1.5 Tbyte available today and with 4 bays for easy expansion or replacement of plates is possible later. User accounts with limits and access rights are (important for backups) easy to set up. The intuitive user interface of the NAS is a WEB interface and easy to use. The DS 413 depends in our Gigabit Ethernet with 2 Netgear GS108 switches and serves the Time Machines of Macs as centralized backup. The films and the music for iTunes have been stored on the NAS, accessed through the Macs, which are connected to the TV and stereos. The images are developed on the laptop and processed and stored on the NAS. Accessed without problems on all computers eg for slideshows on TV or on the pads. Everything works with copy rate greater than 100 Gbytes per hour toward NAS. Simultaneous streaming to the Mac's music and movies is also no problem. Experiments with the stream over WiFi are not satisfactory, we have simply too many Wlans in the neighborhood so that the bandwidth is moderate and only for the surf may the Internet reaches. The important data on the NAS as documents, pictures and music in addition every 14 days on an older USB 1.5 Tbyte hard drive with Synology Time Backup manually backed up incrementally and stored away. So I can then sleep peacefully ...
Conclusion: Although is slightly more expensive than other solutions, but with the growth of data (Raw images, EyeTV films, music) I do not therefore no longer every 18 months to copy everything to the new USB drives and I have centralized backup of 4 computers. The features and performance values are suitable to the requirements, so 5 stars!
