The Coolpix L840 is after my second P520 bridge camera of Nikon. The feel makes a robust and insensitive impression that the surface is shiny and yet no unsightly fingerprints remain on back. The camera fits comfortably in your hand and is not too heavy, despite four AA batteries. Why the purchase in the color red (and presumably also in eggplant) advise against, I will explain later. Personally, I do not mind that the camera does not need a battery but conventional batteries. Both have advantages and disadvantages, from the life I notice no difference, the batteries of the L840 hold as long as the battery of my P520, with the frequent use of flash or when shooting are both quite quickly empty. I noticed right at the first use an error, but am not sure if this is the case for all cameras: With the Lens Cap, the lens does not turn on, the error message "Lens Error" appears on the display. The lid also clamps little. Taking it off and then turn on the camera, it is running normally. Nothing serious, but uncommon. The menu is built up typically very self-explanatory as for Nikon. Really good, I find that the exposure will be achieved with a simple push of a button, and is no longer hidden in the menu. The six different Hauptaufnahmemodi are sufficient to achieve a good to really good result in just about any environment. Some modes have sub-items, for example, the famous shoot at night or sunset, but also exciting things like the mode "Food", "fireworks" or "animal pictures". Here you can let your creativity run free. Afterwards you can see the images on the camera itself still a little editing, for example, add the fish-eye effect. Some getting used to for me was that the camera has no viewfinder, but only works on the display. This can wave, but do not turn what would be very useful for self-portraits. The resolution is ok. Nikon touts the exceptional zoom which really has an amazing focal length, but the L840 course eventually overwhelmed and the camera can bring reasonably satisfactory results only with a tripod (connection of the camera). The focus works only delayed slow and particularly strong in Dynamic Fine Zoom. Nevertheless, the performance is significantly better than that of my P520. Now to the point of having the camera cost a star: The glossy case reflects! At high light conditions, for example in direct sunlight reflects the housing and in the pictures is a light, reddish glow seen. This is clearly also when photographing surfaces that also shine. I think that this will also be the case with the color aubergine and that's really, really a pity, because so many snapshots have these unnatural red shimmer, especially on the screen. Had the case mat, this would not happen. Apart from this and the hook of the lens cap, I am of the L840 very enthusiastic. She brings everything to make even more demanding owners get razor-sharp images. The camera comes with many features, including the connection via Wi-Fi with a special app for iPhone or iPad. With the app you can transfer the images of the L840, but these also control (zoom and trigger). For me, the camera can be nothing to be desired and I can only recommend, but I would tend to black!
