The Olympus, with its 12-40 mm (equivalent to 24-80 in miniature) a slightly extended focal length range with the same luminous intensity of constant 2.8. The chassis is made of metal and even the lens cap with Innenpinch is made of aluminum.
The lens weighs just 400 grams (considerably much lighter than any full-frame 24-70er ever be) and fits comfortably in your hand. Attached to the EM5 the whole thing, however, does not feel perfectly balanced. For the small EM5 the part is probably a bit large (would certainly be on the EM1 otherwise).
A sun visor is included therewith and a small bag for storage too. Even the packaging makes perfect her something, even if it is perhaps not so important.
From outward appearances everything fits perfectly. The black paint is very good and the lens processing affects a total flawless. Focus and zoom ring both rotate very smoothly and also the changeover from manual to autofocus makes a good impression. Overall, in my opinion, clearly the bestverarbeitete Olympus Lens for Micro Four Thirds (MFT). The quality of weather resistance I have not tested.
The optical qualities are in my opinion also very good, although I would admit that I have tested the product very short and I still could not form a really deep conviction here. The focus is (very subjectively assessed) at least at the level of the 17ers f1.8 Olympus already at f 2.8 super and at most focal lengths.
It is great that man can answer it at all focal lengths very close to the subject. The minimum focusing distance is relatively short. Thus, the background is blurred and very clear in this rather handsome curves.
Autofocus worked on my EM5 also good, though not quite sooo great as expected. Especially with a little less light, it was not always in the familiar Olympus quasi-light speed. They say, however, that should be better in the EM1.
And what is now 24-70igern with compared to the full-size?
In my humble opinion, the Olympus 12-40 does not need to hide in terms of sharpness, contrast and color. The results with the EM5 are very convincing. Not the same results be achieved that in dimly lit garages and basements as a full-frame camera's clear, has nothing to do with the lens, but with the system. The exact one should perhaps make before buying again but quite deliberately. After all, unlike the super prime lenses that are available for MFT meantime, the lighting conditions quite often play with an aperture of 2.8 course an aggravating role. For evening events the product for me, therefore, only come into question if it does not go differently. Otherwise, you have to continue to access prime lenses in my opinion. The lack of some low-light capabilities of the system come to fruition something else.
And something else (even this system-related): When it comes to depth of field, the 12-40 course in no way rich on a MFT cameras full Forma Tern with 24-70ern the water. That was clear to me well in advance. However, I had not expected such a deep depth of field over the entire focal length range is actually already. If you want to portray a person as a whole, the background can hardly more blur. For bokeh Addicts the lens is therefore suitable in my opinion only at close range. This circumstance I feel (although the device for the least can not) be very regrettable. So unfortunate that I have ultimately decided despite the great performance by the way not to buy. Since the point is, however, to evaluate very subjective, I did not take it into account when evaluating (would be as if I would be accused of a full-frame camera, its sensor is too big) and give it 5 stars.
Conclusion: for the die-hard MFT User strong buy recommendation!
