The biggest advantage of the new device is the improved reception performance and their implementation. If you were traveling with the 62s, has made a break, in which the device was lying quiet, had after half an hour but even more several meters on the odometer. That is much less the case, which I can not judge whether the inclusion of the GLONASS or other software change (evt. Smoothing) is the 64s. Is me but made a positive impression.
Larger memory is nice and also what value, especially when the Geocaching is for example not just in one place on the road, but also from and get there to somewhere else. Whereby the 62s allowed already 5,000 caches, which I almost always sufficient good. The rate to be slightly translucent faster, but not much.
The internal battery I do not need. The 62s I use from time to time in the car as Navi, then here with permanent or not connected (but not permanently illuminated) display. Here it may happen in an intensive cache tag that the batteries are empty in the evening, but is much more often the case, that I forgot to use freshly charged batteries. I have therefore permanently a few freshly charged batteries to replace it. Since the 64s rather has a shorter term, you need the same here. With the built-in battery, I then a second system that the GARMIN "occupied" during the charging time, an additional cable (which I would not do otherwise) required and on the other hand saves neither spare batteries nor its charger. For infrequent users may be helpful for me rather less.
The software changes hold fairly limited: a few new data types, without which I could live so far. In my view, reasonable and necessary changes, there is no, even if I here could imagine a lot: for example the "trip computer" different capturing overflowed and distance traveled, configuration possibility of keys takeover of Peilungsmöglichkeit when entering the "next hop" when Geocaching, formula support, intermediate objectives, Wherigo, .... Since there is in software for smartphones much of what certainly not likely to be too difficult to implement, but is not made by Garmin.
The other haptics, operation and display are essentially as in the 62s, and actually like its predecessor. Already talking about the 60CSx (2007/2008?) 240x160 pixels was not the big hit, but was still ok. Today, in 2014, I would call this resolution a device in this price range rather than "fair to poor". For menus, it is sufficient, but already maps could use more, not forgetting spoiler photos ...
Genial I found initially that the 64s also supports Bluetooth. Not because of the transmission of GPS signals at a smartphone (which has nowadays anyway integrated with high probability a GPS sensor), but rather because of the opportunity now to get even without a PC data on Garmin. Individual coordinates can be downloaded before the smartphone and then type in manually, but it would be super, all cache descriptions, tracks or Pocket Queries go to load on smartphone and thus "refuel" the 64s to. UNFORTUNATELY THAT DOES NOT WORK !!! At least not with Android-based systems and is not planned here. This statement I have the Garmin service unfortunately writing. With iPhones it could work over the Basecamp app.
Conclusion: Instead of a "big hit" in the sense of genuine development to Garmin has chosen a very gently facelift. If a connection to the Android phone possible, I would have immediately ordered a functioning and replaced my 62s. Now I'd would rather buy a back 62s in the case of the defect of my (3 years old) 62s, because my "improvements" in the 64s currently 100 "charge" simply not worth ....
