Customer Review

Diary of a midwife is the story of an obstetrician based in Chennai. She tells us his life, his choices, his disappointments, but also and especially the history of several of his patients. She met hundreds of course but some will mark his life. Each has to face difficult situations and the author uses it to portray us some of the problems faced by women in India today: the small Muslim out of school when she has her period and a Once married gave birth to boys, the anorexic abused by her husband's family because she is unable to give birth to a boy, the teenager who becomes pregnant and requesting an abortion, the woman who is so obsessed by the idea of getting pregnant that her husband abandons her for another woman ... All these portraits are exciting and well described. Having lived in Chennai loved visualize the places described by the author.
It is a beautiful novel about the lives of women all different. The tone is neither maudlin nor dramatic, despite the hardness of certain situations, but the novel makes us think even if one has the feeling of living in the years light of these women. I read it in one day so the accounts were linked well. I highly recommend it!
