From Miéville I'd never heard of until recently something and "Perdido Street Station" then ordered me simply times on suspicion. It was worth it. When embarking on his fantasy world with birdman, cactus people, steam engines and a bit of magic, you will be rewarded with an extremely exciting and complex fantasy thriller. Especially me, the fact, please do not let anything be heading to a sugar-sweet happy ending, but that he was "realistic" that represents the end. Also Miéville has no qualms about letting "good" characters bloody brutal die. Unlike Happy-end books they also do not dive with him again at the end on, one last time to help the hero. The "good guys" are not only good, but have some very immoral act to their (good) to achieve goals. In "Perdido Street Station" actually act all the characters in a constant gray area that fails for some a little lighter, a little darker in others and in yet another all black. Annoying-good, faithful hobbits or elves always noble's not here. Miéville is probably a great lover of the English language, which makes some very difficult to understand the book for a German. Compared to the works of authors such as Jasper Fforde, Terry Pratchett or Tad Williams or Neal Stephenson, I read now without use of my English-English dictionary, I had at Perdido Street Station disproportionately to Oxford Concise Dictionary attack because Miéville almost never used the simplest term to describe something and he probably has a penchant for foreign words and technical terms. And if he starts to describe times, then he does it also extensively, especially the architecture and the inhabitants of the city he invented New Crobuzon. Here also the only small weakness may be seen in "Perdido Street Station". Some of the contents are partially redundant and often very detailed and long. In conjunction with the not very simple language, this can then lead to you only once needs a break, although you really want to continue to read the excellent story. All in all, it pays to stay on the ball. I've added myself "The Scar" and the need to make an effort doomed to surpass "Perdido Street Station".
