Once you've read 5-star "The Queen's Fool," "The Virgin's Lover" is unbearable. "The Queen's Fool" benefitted from a highly convincing narrator, Hannah, through Whose eyes the reader saw Mary, Elizabeth and Dudley. "The Virgin's Lover" tells the story from the point of view of the historical people and keeps switching points of view. Maybe it would not be so bad if Gregory had stuck to the stories she already told in "The Queen's Fool" - but she rode Council one whole year, the most dramatic year of "The Queen's Fool", and changes tone and content - but Definitely not for the better. For Example, the whole episode with Amy Dudley Which is seeking a highlight in "The Queen's Fool" loose all its quality in "The Virgin's Lover". And much worse, the whole relationship between Elizabeth and Dudley is totally different, unrecognizable anymore, and has lost all its fascination and power. I'm sorry to say That after 100 pages I could not stand this totally trivialized novel anymore. Zero stars.
