*) The web configuration interface is veeeery slow. As soon as you want but at the same time copied and configure even data from another hard drive on the NAS, it collapses completely and will almost inoperable.
*) Will add some reconfigured (new user in the shared folders, or mode change) all approvals for a few seconds and stopped the traffic collapses. - I run on the NAS a virtual machine that does not like it when the connection breaks off constantly!
*) The NAS does not like special characters in passwords (!!!) - I wanted to include it in my Active Directory, but this did not succeed, as used in my administrator password special characters. Since I do not want to change the admin password is not possible for me to integrate into AD. Also in the User Configuration No special characters are allowed in password. - Very weak!
*) As I use the station for reasons of performance in RAID 0 mode, of course a good backup is necessary because otherwise everything would be gone when a disk failure. So I have a 1TB External HDU connected, on which I want to back up the important data. Also proved not as easy as thought:
First, the USB hard drive is recognized, however, I could write on anything, although I have forgiven the write permissions in the permissions. Then notice should have known that the external hard drive with NTFS formatted was and this was the reason why the drive always only read-only has been mounted. -> In the Admin interface, you can get any information about it, and also the help which can be called from the web interface out and needs to call a link on a Japanese website works never (!). The enclosed documentation is silent for data backup in any case completely. It is only mentioned that one should make one. On the features of the LinkStation backup is not received.
So I then reformatted the hard drive to FAT32. Now I was able to configure backups for the disk that have been written on the external USB drive, just occurred to me that some files were deleted when an incremental backup on the fuse holder and then copied again, which is not really sense an incremental backups.
The reason is that the files are not stored on the FAT32 disk with correct upper / lower case and therefore the files are not resist detected when comparing the incremental backup. When backing up my digital photos (several thousand), the fuse thus always a matter of several days (!!)
Since the hard drive can be formatted by the LinkStation with the Linux File System EXT3, I'm just going to try to do so, hoping that the file name will no longer be corrupted and the backup works better. Issue again at EXT3 - you can see the data behind not should read easily on Windows system, the LinkStation break. Itself under Linux because Buffalo has rumgepfuscht incomprehensibly also on EXT3, the mounting plate of a challenge ...
The external hard drive is being formatted in EXT3 moment with what now stretches over an hour. The LinkStation can not be accessed during formatting period. Neither the shares work, even the Web administration interface, could be the decision of how long that still lasts.
You can tell the system to already much that it is a Billigstlösung. For that important data backup is so bad solved the connection breaks off at configurations and passwords do not allow special characters, there is deduction at the stars.
What's even noticed:
*) The connection to play the Playstation 3 to MP3 files and videos worked without problems. The Buffalo LinkStation wurder recognized by the PS3 immediately as a media server (as well as from the media player)
*) The link station also offers the option of a print server, which is also not documented. I then found out about internet forums that it only supports PostScript printers. This part is therefore unusable for 99% of users.
*) It is supplied with a torrent client, which can download files in the background during operation of the LinkStation. My experience with it is that the performance of the station extremely suffers when this is used. So better leave it alone here. Built CPU appears to be extremely weak dimensioned.
If you can live with the above problems and a fast storage for the home network to the central database searches is well served by the LinkStation at this price. - The part but still a Giga-Switch hang so that the fast disk access can actually be utilized. - Is there already for little money! - For networks with more users, however, I would not recommend the NAS.
