- A "real" firewall to define with the possibility even rules
- Little or no wireless features (I do not, because I use anyway external APs)
- Enough power to run many connections (up / downloads) simultaneously
- Future security, because already for VDSL2 equipped (Wan never know ...)
I am also a former Fritz box fan and found the features of the Fritz box always very diverse and functional. But sometimes I came there at borders. For example, a device may only have certain ports to the Internet. With the Fritz box ungefritzten impossible. There were also at the Fritz box unfortunately (not to mention the lack of external antennas) no way a WPA2 Enterprise network to span. This is for me at 14 WLAN devices, however, already essential. Who needed to change the 40-character password in 14 devices once, knows what I'm talking!
The input and configuration of the device designed course not quite as child easily as with a Fritz box, but if one has done something clever with the DSL issues and the modulation method (and has naturally taken a look in the manual) is to set up a problem more. There are on the XyXEL website even a howto-guide on how to either ADSL or VDSL connections set up. So if the only concern is to get on the internet, this can be accomplished even an inexperienced user.
To Stabiliät I can say that the Internet connection is very robust, but in 2 cases the connection was successfully established with me, but no data passed through the tunnel. After restarting the router, everything was back to normal. This may of course (eg lying on the connection to the DSLAM, as the Sync works so) on my Internet connection are.
At the moment, the router runs with me about 3 months and there are no other abnormalities occurred except:
- The router has a problem with special characters in a WPA (2) -PSK network. With a detour via Telnet, however, worked the use of special characters in the password correctly. There seems no doubt to be a problem in the verification of the settings in the web menu.
- The web menu can be a little sluggish. This Although I was already accustomed to the Fritz box, much to me, however, adversely affect.
Functions or features that struck me positively:
- Relatively speedy restart over the Fritz box
- Wi-Fi is turned off by default
- Many functions and rules can be combined with timers, ie it is possible firewall rules timed to enable / disable. Also all SSIDs of the WLAN can be switched separately with timing.
- Ability to specify a central syslog server for logging
- In general Telnet / SSH access to the management of the device
For the price you get a professional router, with this you can react very flexibly to changes in the network. Unfortunately, those products are very rare on the (consumer) market because either you get only devices that should really kill everything (DECT, WiFi, DLAN, NAS, FTP Server, Download Server, VoIP PBX) or very favorable aufgebohrte modem gets who simply can not offer many features.
So the bottom line is a strong buy recommendation for those who can no longer endure the limitations of the Fritz boxes / want and use for Wi-Fi and phone anyway external devices.
