A half-hour masterpiece is this record of Shirley Horn from 1965. The piano trio, basic ingredient of all their recordings, will be here by three wind instruments and not reinforced lower than Kenny Burrell on guitar. The exploration of emotional states, otherwise Shirley Horn's trademark, is not the cause of this combo. But we are witnessing here a mixture that oscillates between nostalgia for the distant and the joy of now, so that one suddenly thinks he is in Brazil. Not because of the rhythm (well the transformation from Lennon / McCartney "And I love him" in an easy Bossa is the already close), but due to the unpretentious manner in which the two feelings become one. This is Shirley Horn of its coolest side (the cover speaks for itself): close to the micro it is less than empathetic actor rapporteur. And the result is a little rounder than their Mercury recordings from 1963, which is not least that it is sitting here at the piano itself.
Even if you are traveling with heavy luggage, a cookie should for Shirley Horn "Travelin 'Light" still have in your suitcase.
