This book is aimed at students and practitioners alike. At first I was very skeptical that this can be achieved. But I can say that this challenge has become full justice to the author.
There is no specific preparation for a particular test situation, but to practice speaking with Legal English in general and improve. The book will bring the generally advanced English reader therefore most.
In my view, the book is suitable both for readers with English as a first or second language. Both groups are here in search of knowledge are sure to find something.
The book has a simple and pleasant language, but comes in liquid and authentic. Numerous tables, summaries, lists and checklists facilitate the work with the book immensely. In addition, you can easily look up a little later. This Haigh comes quickly to the point, so there is a very high information content. In addition, can be found at the end of the book a number of lists with obscure Wörten, words that can be easily confused, frequently used Latin terms, a glossary, common phrases and much more. Here you will find a wealth of information that you will otherwise look in vain and are practically to look up.
It starts with a little grammar. Here Haigh sets priorities and responds to the points that are most frequently done wrong, instead of getting lost in a general introduction.
Then something vocabulary's turn. Here I especially like that the frequent practice in formulations are explained in detail. So you can tell the future quickly when you're in a for example to do with a typical phrase and knows their meaning or is alerted if a Latin term for an English-speaking lawyer has a slightly different meaning than for a German.
The table with legal terminology in comparison between American and British English was very informative. Very successful strike me also throughout the book repeatedly interspersed notes which words are best used and which words, phrases or grammar are suitable less or are even counter-productive.
It is then explained how to design a contract and what is to be observed. The following are examples of typical terms which will be explained in detail. This helps greatly to better understand legal texts and Treaties.
This is followed by numerous situations from the legal daily with many formulation examples, instructions and notes on negative examples.
The content here is doubly interesting: On the one hand you get expertise to language conveys and other practical guidance for specific situations at work (such as participating in and leading contract negotiations). The latter knowledge can therefore be used even in purely German daily.
Haigh enjoys competence, accept linguistic tone and the one or other great insider info. The emphasis convinced.
It spread in the book, which can all be solved within a few minutes (with one exception) a total of 35 small exercises. This solidifies the knowledge and I have perceived as pleasant loosening of reading. The solutions can all read (with 2 exceptions) at the end of the book.
For this book, in which -as buzzwords- in -buisness even can laugh again, I grabbed like always. Honestly, how many of serious legal reference books, one can say that?
What you do not get, is knowledge or vocabulary the substantive law. However, this would go beyond the scope considerably and therefore can not be expected. Those who had nothing to do with Legal English, which could facilitate the work with the book reading an appropriate introduction to an English legal system. Mandatory condition that is by no means, it is sufficient in the case at hand concomitantly taking a legal dictionary.
Only criticism: The foil on the cover began to peel off, so that the envelope no longer looks so beautiful. However, this happened only after intensive use. So you can safely live well.
Conclusion: This is the author of an excellent standard work succeeded. It reminds me of nothing you on the book still could be improved or need.
For the price you get a lot on offer. Above all, we can say one thing: you can not go wrong by purchasing and reading the book certainly nothing.
The 5 stars are more than justified.
