Dark Intervals (1998) (Audio CD)

Customer Review

In a phase of his live solo concerts in which he actually (still) rather the longer improvisations gave preference, Jarrett played in a concert in Japan (one is tempted to ask: where else) a recording, which Live under his -Solo publications takes a certain special position. "Dark Intervals" includes eight short and medium-length pieces, which are all managed by a gloomy, melancholy, sometimes anthemic basic theme. It makes itself, starting from the entrance piece "Opening" that spreads a gloomy, yet powerful mood with very low frequencies and an incredibly elongated decay, about the gently melodic "Americana", the fast-driving "Fire Dancer" through the hymn-like lyrical finale "Recitative" an atmosphere wide that could accompany a dark November day well. The short, brisk, melodic "Entrance" is to remain in this image, the tiny ray of sunshine, which is then covered again by dark clouds.
Many low tones and the very minor-heavy baseline of the pieces provide but not necessarily at the same time for sadness in the listener, on the contrary! One can drift away from this wonderfully dark, atmospherically dense pieces, let yourself go and really feel safe in the legendary game of the Master.
How variable Keith Jarrett is in his musical expressions, seen when he three days later, unreeled the third concert in the same hall in Tokyo, a completely different repertoire. To celebrate its centenary concert in Japan, he played exclusively standards-interpretations - of melancholy then no trace! As a DVD, entitled "Solo Tribute" this recording is available.
A musical parallel to "Dark Intervals" there is in a recording of the standard trio from the fall of that year (1987), namely "Changeless" with four original compositions and free improvisation, prevail on the also rather dark, gloomy motives.
The basic mood of "Dark Intervals" fits the black cover with a cloud image.
