For the (cheap) price the instrument makes an amazing quality impression. While it is all plastic, but thick and sturdy and well manufactured plastic. The device is relatively large and heavy, so solid, and has a nice design.
The often criticized running noise in VHS mode is available, audible, to about 1.0 meters (if it's quiet in the room), but at 3 meter distance or running film music you do not hear it, so it does not bother me. There is no louder than other VHS recorder I know. This Toshiba has no special running noise problem.
The audio and sound of the DVD mode via digital coax connection to the AV receiver is good, because there is nothing wrong. Beautiful 5.1 Dolby cinema feeling as one would expect, no disappointment in this area.
There are four ways to connect TV: SCART (RGB), component video, S-VHS and Composite. There are two Scart connections. There is a separate connection to a camcorder or similar device (optional Composite or S-Video).
The remote control is good, functional and manageable, fits comfortably in your hand and contains all the necessary commands and is not overloaded.
The provided printed manual is good. Expressed as Manual (not in CD form) thoughtful, detailed, all in German, informative, easy to understand and well. Good German translation.
Too bad: no HDMI output available, for me to get over, however, as I have not prepared myself for HDMI, despite 42-inch plasma screen with HD-ready. But HDMI is the future.
Incidentally, also lacks a DV-in port, important for people who their private video from a DV camcorder and digital lossless want to transfer to DVD - that does not work with this Toshiba. It's all about analog composite or S-Video.
Still, very good image quality, via Scart or component video, not only DVD but also in VHS. The VHS picture quality is so good, spicy and with a pleasant blaze of color that I hardly miss almost DVD quality ... even old VHS movies are absolutely fit for human consumption, even considered on my high-resolution 42-inch TVs in just 3 meters , Amazing. And, although this Toshiba device "only" 4 video heads has (customary 6). Despite surprisingly good VHS picture quality.
So far so good. Up to this point the unit would earn 5 stars.
Aaaber: what annoys me tremendously is that can only be heard on the mikrigen TV speakers when playing VHS tapes, the sound! There is no way to output the sound to my Dolby 5.1 system (an AV receiver), not even in a normal, analog stereo mode.
That's disappointing. Even when it comes to old VHS tapes, I would like to hear my old films still with good sound, at least stereo with strong bass through my stereo and my big boxes .....
Conclusion: Who can do without good VHS audio qualities, because it does not depend on him, which is highly recommended the device. Because: Very good image quality and very good value for money. For pure copy functions, from VHS to DVD and vice versa from DVD to VHS, very appropriate. Even for pure DVD edition with good Dolby 5.1 sound very good and recommended (ie as a normal DVD player).
Buy.
