ECTACO jetBook Lite eBook reader white [electronics] (Electronics)

Customer Review

JetBook-Lite Ectaco I bought a month ago and can therefore a bit more detail and substantiated give my opinion on this eBook reader.

>
JetBook-Lite (JBL) is one of the few e-book reader, which provides an alternative to conventional display eInk displays, in which the power supply via batteries is ensured and is also having very low. The software is also very mature and runs correctly.

The JBL has a reflective, monochrome 5-inch TFT display (B 7,6x H 10cm) and has completely the dimensions (W 10.9 x H 15.2 x D 1.3 cm) at just 260g. It is powered by four AA batteries. The term is said to be at 23h, had it not precisely measured, but it seemed to me less. It has on the upper side an SD card slot and a mini USB slot. The cap that covers the ports, seems more unstable and is just cumbersome to open the first time. Nevertheless makes makes the JBL overall a stable impression and remains active until the cap not verabeitet cheap.

The display is sharp, the contrast is very good in low light conditions, with artificial light depending on the light intensity good to satisfactory. The quality of representation varies, depending on what angle you hold the JBL (and not as Ectaco claiming the ad was also at 180 ° good read). It should also be noted that the display a 'flicker' shows (is a problem in many JBL devices, not only in my). After Ectaco This is still due to software defects that should be corrected in the future yet. But in my opinion it is up to the display, because the flicker in some places is more visible and shows up again and goes back. In addition, the flicker is not visible only at a certain angle and visible in italics. But in itself is not bad and also appears to rarely, therefore no downside. Unlike other readers, in my opinion is for the reader feeling when JBL despite everything the most pleasant, so that the eyes do not get tired even after hours of reading. :)

Note: I am referring to the firmware version 0.15dB.

In general it can be said that almost all functions are carried out quickly and efficiently, except for the boot process when you first start or when changing the battery. This demonstrates the advantages of TFT displays (no "flash" when page turning). Furthermore, you have the typical features like rotation (to the right only possible), menu language, file manager or -umblättern Auto sleep /. The menu is very clear and it can be sorted by author or title, the books. Is to note that the tracks are displayed in PDF format to the PDF tag and remaining of normal file name is displayed.

The JBL support according to the instructions of Ectaco following text and image formats: 'ePub, Mobi, PRC, RTF, .txt, .pdf, .fb2, .jpg, .gif, .png, .bmp and.' In addition, I was able to read (with DRM support non-German sites) nor HTML and PDB. Here you can do except for the image formats two distinctions between PDF and other formats.

In the books that are in the PDF format, the font size can not be changed, but only the larger aspects of themselves, 50% of the page size up to 6400% - quite unnecessary! Also me the sense of the screen function is not entirely clear. Here divides the JBL the page in a grid, nine equal squares, is then zoomed in on one of these squares. It may be that this is useful just for newspapers in PDF format, but what does it with newspapers, so generally books with pictures and corresponding size (MB) has to be, will be seen later. Positive are of course the typical features like 'Table of Contents', 'to window width adjust' or 'full screen' (for images very useful). Important: The JBL has no PDF Reflow!

Unlike PDF, the JBL promises in the other formats (ePub etc.) far better features. As would be the one the different font sizes (12,16,18,20,24,32 pkt) and fonts (Arial, Verdana), the dictionary (all translated from the English language, or vice versa, specifically: Rus, Pol, and Spa Deu; an Eng-Eng dictionary does not exist), the alignment (centered, left justified) and coding of Scripture and the search function (but only when the current page looking for something, not completely). The Textreflow is very fast in any change. Negative is' and is a star deduction !!! - The lack of contents and no support for internal links, ie you can here the 'Jump to side' function use (useless without contents, but on the off chance it may indeed fold) or if next has to be found the appropriate page ( for books with more than 500 pages of a lengthy procedure: P).

As already indicated in the PDF formats, has the JBL hardware related limitations when opening books. For example, can not be images (some of the pictures included) A4 open (there is an error that JBL would have too little internal memory) to large files (MB) are opened very slowly and also the limitations of change format to format. Here it is easy to try. Emergency with appropriate software (Calibre) corrections to the eBook perform until it works. Until now I had only once as a problem in a front page of an eBook (PDF). Just have the cover removed, and then it went again;).

The JBL can keep very well. I am glad that I have the Lite version, because the battery compartment can be very readily embrace with his left hand so that the thumb is placed perfectly to the side lever. In this position, the weight is best balanced. In rotary state it will be a little more problematic (applies only to PDFs). Again with his left hand, time is of the thumb but at the keys, which are suitable for turning. But the problem is that you have to scroll with PDF files yet, so press the arrow keys. For this I need the hand cramp always something quite annoying in the long run.

I am quite happy with the JBL. Unrestricted I can not recommend it (you should the problem with the table of contents and the links do not underestimate), but on the whole, the best device in its price range.

In summary:
+ Very good reading feeling (display)
+ Many functions
+ Fast (screen layout and software)
+ Many formats
- No table of contents and no hyperlinks in epub (or similar.) - Formats
- LCD flicker
